The Claverack Republican Club will conduct its annual roadside cleanup Saturday, May 6 in the Claverack Hamlet. A number of years ago the group “adopted” three one-mile stretches of road leading to the traffic light in the center of the hamlet and each spring members and volunteers, in conjunction with the NYS Department of Transportation, pick up the trash that has accumulated along the sides of those three stretches. Reflective helmets and vests, along with special tools and bags, are supplied by the NYS DOT, which sponsors the “Adopt A Highway” program throughout the state. DOT trucks pick up the accumulated bags of trash at the conclusion of the clean-up. Anyone wishing to join the group for the cleanup should report to the staging area behind the A.B. Shaw firehouse by 9 a.m. on the day of the event. In the event of rain, the effort will be postponed until the following Saturday. The Claverack Republican Club also sponsors the recent Easter Egg Hunt at the Claverack Park and the free Summer Concert Series Thursday evenings during July and August, also at the Claverack Town Park in Mellenville. The group meets the first Thursday of the month at the Claverack Town Hall.

John Lee was re-elected president of the Claverack Republican Club at the group’s end-of-the-year meeting December 2 at Claverack Town Hall, Route 217, Mellenville.
This marks Lee’s second year of leading the organization, which he characterizes as in a “rebuilding” stage of its existence, with a renewed focus on community activities as well as political involvement. The club is best known as the sponsor the “Summer Concert Series” which presents live bands Thursday nights during July and August at the Claverack Town Park in Mellenville, a program that will continue in 2017. Charles Schram will return as the club’s vice-president in 2017. He took a year off from his political activities in 2016 but was re-energized by the results of the 2016 presidential election in which Republicans took firm control of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Also re-elected were Club Treasurer P.J. Keeler and Secretary Brenda Schram. The meeting was followed by a Christmas party at Gabriel’s in Philmont. The club meets on the first Thursday of every month (except January) at 7 p.m. at the Claverack Town Hall (Town Court) in Mellenville. Anyone interested in joining the organization is encouraged to attend a regular monthly meeting. Claverack Republicans gave a unanimous endorsement to Town Justice Michael Cozzolino at their annual Caucus, held August 3rd at the Claverack Town Hall. Cozzolino, an attorney and former Chief Assistant Columbia County District Attorney, was appointed in June 2016 to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Town Justice Charles Hoag. The appointment was made by unanimous vote at the May meeting of the Claverack Town Board. “We couldn’t be happier to have someone with the experience and qualifications that Justice Michael Cozzolino has,” said Claverack Republican Committee Chairman Kevin Johnson. “He is an impeccable attorney and jurist,” Johnson added. Cozzolino, a life-long resident of Claverack, is a graduate of Columbia-Greene Community College, Marist College in Poughkeepsie, and Albany Law School. He began his career in 1987 as a Columbia County Deputy Sheriff. After graduating Cum Laude from law school in 1996, Cozzolino worked for 15 years as an Assistant District Attorney, including eight years as Chief Assistant District Attorney, at the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office. In 2011, Cozzolino left the District Attorney’s Office to pursue a career in private practice, specializing in criminal defense and Family Court matters. “It is truly an honor to be able to serve the residents of the Town of Claverack as Town Justice. I am grateful for and humbled by the unanimous endorsement of the Town of Claverack Republicans to run for this position in the November General Election,” said Judge Cozzolino. “I am confident in my qualifications and ability to continue to serve as Town Justice for the next four years,” he added. Cozzolino has also received the endorsements of the Conservative and Independence parties. The General Election is Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
