A special event held Thursday July 28th at the Claverack Town Park brought in much needed supplies for the Columbia-Greene Humane Society. The event, part of the Claverack Republican Club's Summer Concert Series, included a performance by the Tailgate Band. Those attending the free concert were asked to consider making donations to the Humane Society. When the night was over, donations of cat food, dog food, kitty litter, dog bones, cat treats, blankets and related supplies filled a pick-up truck. All donations will be turned over to the twin-county rescue organization, based in Claverack. The Summer Concert Series has been a staple of the Claverack community for the past nine years, offering free concerts by top local bands Thursday nights in July and August at the Claverack Town Park. In making the announcement, Club vice-president Charles Schram said the group had been grappling with ways to alter the program to bring it into compliance with CDC guidelines for reducing the transmission of the Covid-19 virus, which has virtually shut down huge segments of the country’s economy, particularly the dining and entertainment segments, since March. “There was simply no way to make it work,” Schram said, “given the nature of the venue and the close interaction required.” In mid-March, the Claverack Town Board announced that it was closing the park through July 29 and would re-evaluate the closure decision at that time, possibly extending it into August or beyond. “That effectively eliminated half of our season,” Schram said. “It made the decision for us.” Schram noted that the bands had already been booked for the season and a number of corporate donations had been received. “The bands have been great,” he said. “They understand what we’re going through. There really was no other choice. I’m sure this was not the only gig they’ve lost because of Covid-19.” Schram said the monetary donations have all been returned. The club will begin planning for the 2021 season at the first of the year. “There is no way to plan ahead with this thing,” he said. “This is all new territory. We just have to take it as it comes.” Three special promotions for local community service organizations, the popular Emergency Services Appreciation Night, the return of the chicken barbecue and eight of the area’s most popular country and rock bands are some of the highlights of the upcoming 2019 Summer Concert Series at the Claverack Town Park, Church Street, Mellenville. The series takes place Thursday nights (generally) in July and August and is sponsored by the Claverack Republican Club. All the concerts are free of charge and open to the public. Because the first Thursday in July is July 4, the kick-off event for the series will be held Saturday, July 6 at the park, with the super popular band Thunder Ridge taking the stage at 7 p.m. This band has been a regular fixture in the Summer Concert Series for the past eight years and never fails to draw huge crowds from all around. But before the band begins, the Club is offering a chicken barbecue with all the fixin’s beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets for the BBQ are $12 each and are available from club members or by e-mailing [email protected]. Advance sale ticket holders are served first and at-the door ticket buyers follow. Take-outs are available. Getting back on the normal Thursday schedule, the July 11 free concert features Jarrod at 7 p.m. and also includes a special promotion for the Everlasting Hope Animal Rescue. Attendees are asked (but not obligated) to bring cat and dog food, old blankets and towels, kitty litter, paper towels and, of course, monetary donations for this locally-based rescue group saving our forgotten pets. The July 18 free concert features the Greyhounds, a popular Capital District rock and oldies band in their first gig with this concert series. The Oldies Show comes back to town July 25, bringing their retro take on rock oldies and doo-wop. This evening also has a special promotion for the Columbia-Greene Humane Society. Attendees are once again asked (but not obligated) to bring cat and dog food, old blankets and towels, paper towels, cat litter and, of course, monetary donations for this long-time twin-county rescue organization saving our forgotten and neglected pets. A large visual display of the shelter’s activities and services will be part of the presentation. Jarrod returns to the Claverack stage August 1 at 7 p.m. Local favorites South Bound take the stage August 8 at 7 p.m. for the fourth annual Emergency Services Appreciation Night, a special salute to area first responders with free hamburgers, hot dogs and giveaways for fire, EMS and police personnel. An impressive array of fire and police apparatus is expected. The August 15 concert features the 217 Band at 7 p.m. The Fender Bender Band comes to town August 22 for a 7 p.m. concert and special promotion for the Mellenville-Philmont Food Pantry.
