April 22, 2017 -- ANNUAL ROADSIDE CLEANUP PLANNED
The Claverack Republican Club will conduct its annual roadside cleanup Saturday, May 6 in the Claverack Hamlet.
A number of years ago the group “adopted” three one-mile stretches of road leading to the traffic light in the center of the hamlet and each spring members and volunteers, in conjunction with the NYS Department of Transportation, pick up the trash that has accumulated along the sides of those three stretches.
Reflective helmets and vests, along with special tools and bags, are supplied by the NYS DOT, which sponsors the “Adopt A Highway” program throughout the state. DOT trucks pick up the accumulated bags of trash at the conclusion of the clean-up.
Anyone wishing to join the group for the cleanup should report to the staging area behind the A.B. Shaw firehouse by 9 a.m. on the day of the event.
In the event of rain, the effort will be postponed until the following Saturday.
The Claverack Republican Club also sponsors the recent Easter Egg Hunt at the Claverack Park and the free Summer Concert Series Thursday evenings during July and August, also at the Claverack Town Park in Mellenville.
The group meets the first Thursday of the month at the Claverack Town Hall.

Claverack Republicans endorse Gerlach and Lee for Town Board seats
Bill Gerlach and Maryanne Lee won the Claverack Republican endorsement for open Town Board seats at a recent caucus held by the Claverack Republican Committee at the Claverack Town Park in Mellenville.
Approximately 35 Claverack Republicans attended the caucus and voted unanimously for the two candidates, both of whom had been endorsed by the Claverack Republican Committee.
The two will appear on the November 3 ballot on the Republican line, as well as the Conservative and Independence Party lines, which had been secured through the petition process.
Gerlach, a well-known area businessman and banker, was appointed to the town board in 2014 to fill the vacancy created when Clifford “Kippy” Weigelt was elected Town Supervisor.
In November of 2014, Gerlach ran successfully for election and has served the people of Claverack since. He is a graduate of Hudson High School and Marist College, and has spent decades in the Columbia County business and banking community – currently serving as Vice President of Commercial Lending with the Kinderhook Bank. He has served on the boards of many local organizations, including the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Columbia and Greene Counties. He also volunteers for the Salvation Army in Hudson.
Gerlach resides in Claverack with his wife Mary, and has two step-children, Patrick and Colin.
Political newcomer Maryanne Lee was born and raised in Claverack and her Columbia County roots go back 350 years. Her parents moved to Claverack in 1924 where they owned and operated a 200+ acre farm. She attended the Claverack School before graduating from Hudson High. While raising her family, Lee attended SUNY Empire State College where she received a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She continued her education at Excelsior College where she earned an MBA with concentration in Global Finance.
Lee taught kindergarten and first grade at Saint Patrick’s school in Catskill until 1995. She then joined Saturn Industries, Inc. (located in Greenport) in 1997 and became President in 2000. Together with her husband John, she founded a second company, Leer Technologies, Inc., in 2005 where she currently holds the position of President and CEO. She is mother of three children – Mary (David Ames) of Kinderhook, Rory (Kristi Venditti) of Lake Katrine, and Ryan of Rhinebeck – and has six grandchildren.
Lee is a member and officer of the Board of Trustees for the Claverack Free Library and Reading Room and several other local organizations.
As a representative on the town council, Lee vows to fight to improve conditions for existing and new small business opportunities in town. She will work to secure funding for local infrastructure investment, and will push to return the town of Claverack to a position of prosperity.

PRESS RELEASE - June 30, 2015
Claverack Republican Committee backs Gerlach and Lee
The Town of Claverack Republican Committee has endorsed two candidates for open seats on the Claverack Town Board in this November’s election
At a recent meeting, the committee unanimously endorsed Bill Gerlach for re-election and local businesswoman Maryanne Lee for the second open seat.
He has served on the Board’s of many local organizations, including the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Columbia and Greene Counties. He also volunteers for the Salvation Army in Hudson.
Gerlach resides in Claverack with his wife Mary, and has two step-children, Patrick and Colin.
Also endorsed at the meeting was political newcomer Maryanne Lee. Lee was born and raised in Claverack and her Columbia County roots go back 350 years on her maternal side. Her paternal grandparents moved to Claverack in 1924 where they owned and operated a successful family farm. She attended the Claverack School before graduating from Hudson High. While raising her family, Lee attended SUNY Empire State College where she received a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She continued her education at Excelsior College where she earned an MBA with concentration in Global Finance.
Lee taught first grade at Saint Patrick’s Academy in Catskill until 1995. She then joined Saturn Industries, Inc. (located in Hudson) in 1997 and became President in 2000. Together with her husband John, she founded a second company, Leer Technologies, Inc., in 2005 where she currently holds the position of President and CEO. She is mother of three children – Mary (David Ames) of Kinderhook, Rory (Kristi Venditti) of Lake Katrine, and Ryan (Noelle Christensen) of Rhinebeck – and has six grandchildren.
Lee is a member and past officer of the Board of Trustees for the Claverack Free Library and Reading Room where she currently serves as Chair of the Three-Year Strategic Planning Committee. Maryanne also belongs to several other local organizations.
As a representative on the town council, Lee vows to fight to improve conditions for existing and new small business opportunities in town. She will work to secure funding for local infrastructure investment, and will push to return the town of Claverack to a position of prosperity.
“I’m impressed with these candidates,” said Claverack Republican Committee Chairman Charles Schram. “Bill has proven his value on the Town Board, particularly in matters related to finance, and Maryanne will be a strong voice for small business in the town. It is important that we have like-minded individuals on the board who will speak to matters of planning and zoning in a universal voice for our long-time Claverack residents, whose concerns and livelihoods are too often minimized or ignored. Both of these candidates are highly qualified and experienced, and will serve the people of Claverack well on the Town Board,” Schram added.
Although the Town Republican Committee has endorsed the above candidates for the November 3 election, the actual selection of the candidates will take place at a caucus meeting. All registered Republicans in the Town of Claverack will have a chance to vote on the candidates at the Republican caucus scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 6:30 pm, at the Claverack Town Park, Church Street, Mellenville.

Vintage rock n' roll returns to the Claverack Park
Vintage rock n' roll will be the theme when the Olde News Band returns for their third season at the Claverack Republican Club's Summer Concert Series Thursday, August 7 at 7 pm at the Claverack Town Park, off Church Street, Mellenville.
The Olde News Band has quickly made a name for itself with a focus on the more complex harmony-driven music of the '60s to '80s.
Though the band was established in 2009, its roots go back to the late 1960s when guitarists Bob Vining and Jim Krisniski found a common bond in songwriting. Since that time they have composed and demoed hundreds of songs, including one that was recorded by Brenda Lee. In 2000 they released a CD of British Invasion-tinged songs under the name Vykris.
Tired of playing strictly in the studio, Vining And Krisniski found themselves yearning for some live feedback and set about forming a band of like-minded souls. The end result was the Olde News Band with Joe Vining (Bob's son) on drums and Chad Witko on bass.
The band is known for its spot-on covers of classic Top 40 hits and has played at dozens of local clubs and private parties. Perhaps their biggest gigs have been at Hudson's Riverfront Gazebo following the Flag Day parades.
All shows in the Summer Concert Series are free, with band fees paid by local corporate sponsors. Food and snacks are available for purchase throughout the evening.
Other shows in the series are the Ben Rounds band on August 14, Peaceful Country on August 32 and Thunder Ridge on August 28.

There will be free country line dance lessons on country music nights beginning at 6 pm.

PRESS RELEASE - July 31, 2013
"Music in the Park concert series continues with Head West and the Ben Rounds Band"
MELLENVILLE - Country music is clearly the favorite genre for audiences at the Claverack Republican Club's Music in the Park series, so participants will not be disappointed when Philmont's own Head West takes the stage Thursday, August 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Claverack Town Park, Church Street, Mellenville.
Led by veteran drummer Clyde Krein and featuring new female vocalist Tricia Barr, Head West will be familiar to the Claverack crowd. They appeared during last year's Music in the Park series and were featured at last fall's soggy Country Music Fest. They also brought down the house during 2011's "Country Music Hoedown" at the Vanderbilt House. The band has also appeared at venues throughout Columbia, Greene, Ulster and Dutchess Counties and has recorded a CD of musical material.
The series continues Thursday, August 15 with the Ben Rounds Band and a special benefit for H.O.P.E. - Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist - a Wilton-based animal rescue organization.
Led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Ben Rounds with drummer Bob Schnitzer and bassist J.B. Randall, the Ulster County-based Ben Rounds Band has been gigging professionally for three years. It is billed as a country-rock dance band with excursions into waltzes, polkas, free-form rock dances, square dances and belt buckle polishers. Their set list can range from Hank Williams to the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson to Kid Rock.
That same night the club is collecting donations of clean towels and rolls of paper towels to benefit H.O.P.E, a non-profit animal rescue organization which relies entirely on foster families to help dogs and cats find permanent adoptive homes. The group works with local animal shelters when the shelters have animals with poor prospects for adoption for any number of reasons. By placing these "troubled" animals with foster families, their chances of becoming adopted increase dramatically, as the animals learn to adapt habits more suited to cohabitation with humans.
Area residents wishing to donate can drop their towels at the park August 15 starting at 4 p.m. through the end of the concert at 9 p.m. If unable to come to the park, call (518) 672-4892 to make arrangements to deliver the donations or have them picked up.
The bands perform 7 to 9 p.m. each night under the park pavilion. Some seating is available but concert-goers are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy the music from the lawn. The grounds open at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Food and snack are available throughout each performance. Coolers are forbidden.
The Music in the Park series closes August 22 with an encore performance by Thunder Ridge.
The club will also sponsor a day-long Farm Fest, honoring local farmers and the harvest season, October 6 at the park.

CLAVERACK - Clifford "Kippy" Weigelt easily outpolled Robert Preusser to become the Claverack Republican candidate for supervisor at the Claverack Republican caucus July 8 at the Claverack Town Park, Church Street, Mellenville.
Weigelt received 148 votes to Preusser's 50. Unofficial write-in candidates James Keegan and Jack Race received one vote each.
Weigelt will face an as-yet unnamed Democratic candidate for the post of Claverack Supervisor in the November 5 election.
Brian Keeler was the top vote-getter in a three-way race for two seats on the Claverack Town Board with 186, followed by Stephen Hook with 136. James Van Deusen scored 86.
In other activity, Town Clerk/Tax Collector Mary Jean Hoose, Town Justice Charles Hoag, Highway Superintendent Louis Lamont, and Assessor Charles Brewer were unopposed and were nominated unanimously. All are incumbents for their positions.
Keeler, Hook, Hoose, Hoag, Lamont and Brewer will all join Weigelt on the November ballot.
The caucus was conducted by the Claverack Republican Committee, with Committeemen Michael Johnston and Charles Schram serving as co-chairs, along with Janice Anderson as secretary. Vote tabulators were Terry Guntert, Bill Arnold, Jim Keegan and Joan Mattson.
A number of campaign events are planned in the months ahead.
