We mourn the passing of longtime Columbia County Civil Service Commissioner and former Claverack Town Supervisor Stan "Mac" Card. Our heartfelt sympathies to Mac's wife Edna, daughter and son-in-law Shanda and Gary Steenburn, his siblings, grandchildren, extended family, and many friends. Mac lived a life of service and gave much of himself to important causes. He will be deeply missed.

Stanford Jay Card, 92, of Claverack passed away February 12, 2016 at Albany Medical Center. He was born on May 18, 1923 and was the son of Edna and Wilmer Card. Stanford is survived by his loving wife, Edna, who he shared a blessed union for 69 years. He is also survived by his daughter Shanda and son-in-law Gary; two granddaughters Samantha and Amara; one brother Robert Card of Philmont and two sisters, Effie Braunfels of Philmont and Kathleen Gent of Valatie.
Stanford attended the Philmont School and then was employed at the Department of Interior as a U.S. Geological Surveyor in Northern New York State. At the outbreak of World War II, he entered the armed services where he served three years. After discharge from the Army, Stanford became a bookkeeper for John L. Duntz Plumbing & Farm Machinery. After working for Mr. Duntz for 5 years, Stanford purchased the business and started the Claverack Pump Service.
During Stanford’s spare time he became interested in politics and in 1950 became a tax collector for a six-year period. In 1957, he was elected as Assessor and then in 1964, he was appointed as Supervisor for the Town of Claverack. In 1966, he was reelected as Supervisor. He served as chairman of the County Government Committee, Chairman of County General Insurance, Chairman of Farms and Markets and Chairman of Community Action Committee. He also served on the Salaries, Planning, Social Services and Transportation Committee. In 1974, Stanford was appointed the Chairman of Civil Services where he served for forty-two years.
Stanford was very involved in the community, serving as a past Elder and Deacon as well as the Chairman of the Cemetery Committee for the Claverack Reformed Dutch Church. He was the former Vice-President of the Claverack School Board. Stanford is a life member of the Elk’s Club, VFW, and DAV. He was a 50+-year member of the A.B. Shaw Fire Company Claverack, and the Churchtown Fire Company. He was a member of the Minkler Seery American Legion No. 252, Philmont Rod and Gun Club, Hudson BPOE 787, Columbia County Development Group, and the Federation of Polish Sportsman Club.
Viewing hours will be held Thursday February 18 from 4:00pm-7:30pm at the Bates and Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green St. Hudson, NY 12534. Funeral services will be held at the Claverack Reformed Dutch Church on Friday February 19 at 10:30am, 88 NY-9H, Claverack, NY 12513. In lieu of flowers, Stanford would like a donation in his name to the American Heart Association.
